Most states tax the price after the trade-in; a few do not. A longer term lowers the payment and raises the interest, and it is how buyers end up owing more than the car is worth.

Negotiate the price, then the loan

Dealers often quote a monthly payment, which a longer term can make look affordable. Knowing the amount financed and total interest keeps the comparison honest.

How the calculation works

Amount financed = (price − trade-in) × (1 + sales tax) + fees − down payment

A $32,000 car with 7% sales tax, $900 of fees and $4,000 down means financing $31,140. At 7.5% APR for 60 months, the payment is $623.98 and total interest is about $6,299.

Watch the term

Terms of 72 and 84 months lower the payment and raise interest, and they make it more likely to owe more than the car is worth. Get a preapproval from a bank or credit union before visiting the dealer; the CFPB publishes an auto loan shopping guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good auto loan term?
60 months or less keeps interest and negative equity risk lower. Longer terms lower the payment but raise the total cost.
Does trade-in value reduce sales tax?
In most states, sales tax is charged on the price after the trade-in. A few states tax the full price.
Should I get financing before going to the dealer?
Yes. A preapproval gives you a rate to compare with the dealer’s offer.
