Many maintenance fees are waived with direct deposit or a minimum balance. Ask the bank what the waiver takes before moving, then compare no-fee accounts at insured banks and credit unions.

Fees are a price you can usually avoid

Checking accounts with no monthly fee are widely available. Paying for one is worth it only if the account gives you something you use.

How the calculation works

Annual fees = maintenance × 12 + overdrafts × fee + ATM uses × 12 × ATM fee + other fees

A $12 maintenance fee, three $35 overdrafts, two ATM withdrawals a month at $5.50 each and $60 of other fees add up to $441 a year, or $4,410 over a decade.

Before you switch

Ask what waives the maintenance fee: often direct deposit or a minimum balance. Overdraft protection can usually be turned off, so a card purchase is declined instead of costing a fee. Moving automatic payments takes time, so keep the old account open for a month or two.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn off overdraft fees?
For debit card and ATM transactions, banks need your opt-in before charging overdraft fees under Regulation E. You can withdraw that consent at any time.
How do I avoid ATM fees?
Use your bank’s network, get cash back at a store, or choose an account that refunds out-of-network ATM fees.
Are online banks insured?
Check that the bank is FDIC-insured using the FDIC BankFind tool. Many online banks are, with the same $250,000 coverage.
