Only gifts to qualified organizations count; the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search checks one. From 2026, taxpayers who do not itemize can deduct up to $1,000 of cash gifts ($2,000 married filing jointly), which this estimate leaves out.

Plan giving like any other goal

Giving a set share of income, planned monthly, is easier to sustain than deciding gift by gift.

How the calculation works

Gifts = income × giving share. If you itemize, tax saved ≈ gifts × marginal federal rate.

Giving 5% of $90,000 is $4,500 a year, $375 a month. If you itemize in the 22% bracket, it saves about $990 of federal tax, so the net cost is $3,510.

Rules that apply

Only gifts to qualified organizations are deductible; the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search checks an organization’s status. From 2026, taxpayers who take the standard deduction can deduct up to $1,000 of cash gifts, $2,000 for married couples filing jointly, and itemizers face a floor of 0.5% of adjusted gross income. Keep written acknowledgments for gifts of $250 or more.
