Strategy comparison

A plan for $18,400

Avalanche · least interest

2y 3m

$3,176 interest

First cleared: Card A

Snowball · smallest first

2y 3m

$3,374 interest

First cleared: Card B

The avalanche saves $198 in this projection. If the difference is small, the strategy you will sustain matters more than theoretical perfection.

Compare the two common payoff orders on your own numbers

The avalanche sends extra money to the highest APR and normally minimizes interest. The snowball targets the smallest balance and normally produces an earlier first payoff. Both keep paying every minimum.

Calculation method

Each month, interest accrues from APR divided by 12, required minimums are paid, and the extra amount goes to the current target. When a debt closes, its former payment rolls into the next target.

Important limits

Real cards may use daily average balances and changing minimum-payment formulas. The projection is educational and should be checked against current statements before setting autopay.

Frequently asked questions

Which method saves the most interest?
The avalanche generally does because it attacks the highest rate first, assuming the same payment amount and no new borrowing.
Why choose the snowball?
Its earlier account closures can make progress easier to see and maintain, even if the projected interest is slightly higher.
What if my payment does not cover the minimums?
Do not rely on this payoff schedule. Contact lenders before missing payments and prioritize immediate housing, food, utilities, transport, and insurance needs.
