The policy's definition of disability matters as much as the amount: own-occupation cover pays if you cannot do your job, any-occupation only if you cannot do any job. Social Security disability has a five-month wait and a strict test.

Your income is your largest asset
For most working households, the ability to earn is worth more than everything they own. Disability insurance protects it, and group policies usually replace only part of it.
How the calculation works
Benefit = min(cap, income × replacement %), reduced by tax if the employer paid the premium with pre-tax dollars. Waiting period cash = essential costs × days ÷ 30.
On $6,500 of monthly income, a 60% benefit is $3,900. Taxed at 20% because the employer paid, it is $3,120, which is 48% of income and $1,180 short of $4,300 of essentials. A 90-day wait needs $12,900 of cash, and $9,000 saved leaves $3,900 to find.
