The bills that break a monthly budget

Car insurance paid once a year, a quarterly water bill and holiday gifts are all predictable. They only feel like emergencies because the monthly budget never saw them coming.

How the calculation works

Annual total = Σ (amount × times per year), then per paycheck = annual total ÷ paychecks per year

The default list totals $1,100 of car insurance, $139 of Prime, $180 of water four times a year ($720), $210 of registration and $900 of gifts: $3,069 a year. That is $255.75 a month, or $118.04 from each of 26 paychecks.

Where it falls short

This gives one steady transfer for everything, which is simplest to automate. When a bill is due soon and little is saved, the steady amount will not catch up in time. The sinking fund planner handles due dates goal by goal.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an annual expense?
Anything predictable that is not billed monthly: insurance premiums, registrations, memberships, property tax if not escrowed, gifts, and routine car maintenance.
Where should the reserve be kept?
A separate insured savings account, so the money is not spent by accident and is still available when the bill arrives.
Is this the same as an emergency fund?
No. These costs are expected. An emergency fund is for costs and income losses you could not schedule.
