Make irregular costs boring

Insurance premiums, repairs, registrations, gifts, and travel are not emergencies when their timing is known. A sinking fund spreads each cost over the paychecks available before it is due.

The formula

Per-paycheck contribution = (target − current balance) ÷ paychecks remaining

The planner calculates every goal separately, then adds them into one payday transfer. Keep a ledger or savings buckets so the combined bank balance still has named jobs.

If the transfer is too high

Prioritize required bills, move flexible dates, reduce optional targets, or fund the most urgent goal first. The tool surfaces the collision; it cannot create room that the spending plan does not have.

Frequently asked questions

How is a sinking fund different from an emergency fund?
A sinking fund is for a known future expense. An emergency fund protects against necessary costs or income losses you could not reasonably schedule.
Should every goal have a separate account?
Not necessarily. Bank buckets or a simple ledger can track several named balances inside one insured savings account.
What if I already saved more than the target?
The required contribution is zero. You can leave the extra as a buffer or deliberately reassign it to another goal.
