The promo ends on a date, not when you feel ready. New purchases on the card may not get the 0% rate, and a late payment can end the promo early. Read the offer's terms before moving the balance.

A transfer is a deadline

A 0% transfer can save hundreds of dollars, but only if the balance is gone, or close to it, when the promotional rate ends.

How the calculation works

The transferred balance is balance × (1 + fee). It accrues nothing during the promo, then the post-promo APR applies to whatever remains. To clear it in time, pay transferred balance ÷ promo months.

Moving $8,000 with a 3% fee creates a $8,240 balance. To clear it in an 18-month promo takes $457.78 a month. At $350 a month, about $1,940 is left when the promo ends and starts accruing 22.99% interest.

Read the terms

New purchases on the transfer card may not get 0%, and payments above the minimum go to the highest-rate balance first under the CARD Act. A late payment can end the promotional rate early. Approval, the fee and the credit limit are all set by the issuer.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a balance transfer fee?
Commonly 3% to 5% of the amount transferred, charged when the transfer posts.
Will a balance transfer hurt my credit?
Applying causes a hard inquiry, and a new account lowers average account age. Lower utilization over time can offset that.
What happens when the promo ends?
The remaining balance starts accruing interest at the card’s regular APR from that date.

Balance Transfers: When They Help and When They Hurt

A 0% transfer on $9,000 with a 3% fee saves $1,784.15 if you clear it in the window. Even doing it badly still saves money. There is only one way it actually costs you, and it is not the fee.

Credit Utilisation and the Statement-Date Trick

Your card reports the statement balance, not the balance after you pay it. Moving the payment two days earlier can turn a reported 61.7% into 6.2% without changing a thing you spend.

Hard vs Soft Credit Inquiries

A soft pull never touches your score. A hard pull costs most people under five points for a few months, and three mortgage applications in one fortnight count as one.
