Utilization is one scoring factor, not a guarantee of a score change. Pay statement balances in full when possible; never carry interest just to build credit.

Reported balance matters

Credit utilization is usually based on the balance an issuer reports, not necessarily the balance after your latest payment.

Calculation method

Total reported balances are divided by total limits. The target payment is the amount needed to bring that aggregate ratio down.

Do not pay interest for a score

Carrying a balance is not required to build credit. Paying statement balances in full can avoid interest while still showing use.
