A dividend is part of the total return, not extra money on top of it: the share price drops by the payout. Qualified dividends are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% outside retirement accounts.

Income from what you own
Dividend income can be part of a retirement plan, but a dividend is part of total return rather than extra money on top of it.
How the calculation works
Each year, income is portfolio × yield. The portfolio grows by price growth, contributions and reinvested dividends; the dividend per share grows by the dividend growth rate.
A $100,000 portfolio yielding 3%, with 5% dividend growth, 4% price growth and $500 a month added and reinvested, grows to about $438,000 in 15 years and pays about $15,176 a year, roughly $1,265 a month.
What to keep in mind
When a company pays a dividend, its share price falls by about the same amount. A high yield can signal a dividend at risk of being cut. Outside retirement accounts, qualified dividends are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on income; ordinary dividends are taxed as income.
