This is a price, not a verdict. A habit that is worth its annual cost to you belongs in the plan. The exercise is for the ones you would not have chosen at that price.

A price, not a verdict

Small repeated purchases are easy to underestimate because each one is small. Seeing the annual price lets you decide whether the habit is worth it, which is a different question from whether it is cheap.

How the calculation works

Monthly cost = price × times per week × 52 ÷ 12

A $6.50 coffee five times a week is $140.83 a month and $1,690 a year. Over ten years that is $16,900 spent. The same monthly amount invested at 5% would grow to about $21,900.

The trade-off

The invested figure assumes a steady return that real markets do not deliver, and it assumes the money would really have been invested. Keep the habits you value at their full price. Cut the ones you would not have chosen at that price.

Frequently asked questions

Is cutting small habits the best way to save?
Rarely the biggest. Housing, transport and debt costs usually matter more. Small habits are worth pricing because the decision is fully in your control.
Why show the invested value?
It shows the opportunity cost of the spending. It is an upper bound, since the money would only grow if it were actually invested.
What return should I use?
For cash, use a savings APY. For long-term investing, a conservative figure such as 5% is more honest than a stock market average.
