Late fees vary by provider and state. The estimate uses $8 per missed payment as a placeholder; check the plan's terms. The CFPB treats most pay-in-four products as credit, with dispute rights like a credit card.

Easy to start, easy to stack

Pay-in-four plans usually charge no interest if every payment is on time. The risk is several plans running at once, each small, together taking a large share of a paycheck.

How the calculation works

With 0% APR, installment = price ÷ number of installments. With an APR, the installments are amortized like a short loan. Late fees are added per missed payment.

A $600 purchase in four installments is four payments of $150 over six weeks. On a $1,900 paycheck, each installment is 7.9% of that paycheck.

What the CFPB says

The CFPB’s research found that many buy now, pay later users hold several loans at once. Check the provider’s late fee and whether it reports to credit bureaus, and keep a list of every plan and its due dates.
